Enchanting Kerala
Kerala – the magical land, where nature conspires with the elements to prepare a feast for your senses. Kerala has long been known for its breath taking scenery. Majestic mountains cloaked in gentle mist, calm seas, meandering rivers, silvery waterfalls and serene backwaters. The state’s USP is it’s salubrious climate all through the year. It is no wonder that tourism is the backbone of Kerala’s economy for so many decades.
Why Kerala?
Firstly, with a tourist friendly ambience pervading throughout the state, it is not surprising that footfalls keep increasing every year. Domestic and foreign tourists throng the state like nowhere else in the country. Apart from regular holiday makers, Kerala has its own special brand of tourists – medical tourism, art lovers, Ayurveda enthusiasts and culture vultures.
With the highest literacy percentage in the country, tourists can look forward to easy communication. This plays a specially relevant role in choice of tourist destinations. Welcome a guest and send back a friend is the mantra of an average Keralite. This attitude contributes to the many reasons why tourists love to come back to Kerala time and again.
The Vital Stats
It is a given that Tourism is a major bread winner in Kerala’s economy. Statistics for the past year indicate a total 15.76 million footfalls in the state. Every year, the average increase in footfall of foreign tourists is 5.15% and domestic is 11.39%. What does that mean to the state’s exchequer? A yearly revenue of about Rs 84,000 Million from foreign exchange and Rs 2,90,000 Million from domestic tourists. And we have hardly scratched the surface of our potential!
Category | Footfalls (Millions) | Average yearly increase | Revenue in Rs Million |
Foreign | 1.09 | 5.15% | 84000 |
Domestic | 14.67 | 11.39% | 290000 |
Who are our guests?
Amongst foreigners, visitors from UK constitute about 16.57 % of the total guests. This is followed by USA (8.51%), France (6.93%), Germany (5.74%) and Saudi Arabia (5.59%). As for domestic tourists, Kerala itself accounts for 63%, TN 8.67%, Karnataka 6.36% and Maharashtra 3.73%.
Compare that with the all India figures of 8.8 Million footfalls from foreign lands and one can estimate the huge potential this beautiful land has in the future. To give you a sense of proportion, India accounts for a mere 1.18% of international tourist arrivals, which is 25th in the world. Even by Asian standards, India stands 8th in the rankings.
What is the current scenario?
Every tourist yearns to have decent and clean accommodation with clean and healthy food, suiting his budget and in safe environs. As hosts, we too bear a responsibility to provide this and more to both the foreign and domestic tourist. It is no wonder that the Tourism ministry as it’s catchphrase – ‘Athithi devo bhava‘, meaning the guest is our God!
Isn’t it surprising to note that total number of rooms in ‘Classified hotels’ of the Tourism department in Kerala is about 15,000 only? If we need to increase footfalls in the state, we need to upgrade our infrastructure also.
